Permanant Account Number (PAN) Card

Every tax payer have to quote his PAN No. while filing his Income Tax Return

PAN card is a Permanent Account Number Card issued by the Income Tax Department. A PAN number has been made compulsory for every transaction with the Income Tax department. It is also mandatory for numerous other financial transactions such as opening of bank accounts, availing institutional financial credits, purchase of high-end consumer item, foreign travel, transaction of immovable properties, dealing in securities etc. A PAN card is a valuable means of photo identification accepted by all government and non-government institutions in the country. It is compulsory to quote your PAN and provide photocopy of PAN, if you to Open a Fixed Deposit Account with a Bank, otherwise 20% of the interest you earn in a year will be deducted as TDS (Tax Deducted at Source), if this interest earning is more than the exempted limit for TDS

With your PAN you can continue to transact with the Income Tax department. However, in respect of other agencies you may encounter constraints without a PAN card since it doubles as a photo identity card. If you lost your PAN card you may get a new card through an application and after paying the requisite fee.

If any one have been alloted two or more PAN, one may retain any one of these numbers and surrender the other through a letter addressed to your jurisdictional Assessing Officer. It is illegal to have two PANs and the penalty for such offence is Rs.10,000/-

By getting a PAN, it is not necesssary to file income tax return every year.Return is to be filed only if you have taxable income.

Forms and Documents to Get a PAN Card

There are two types of PAN applications:

1. Application for allotment of PAN: - This application form should be used when the applicant has never applied for a PAN or does not have PAN allotted to him. Applicant may visit ITD’s website www.incometaxindia.gov.in to find whether a PAN has been allotted to him or not.

Following forms have been notified by ITD (w. e. f. November 1, 2011) for submitting applications for allotment of new PAN:

FORM 49A: - To be filled by Indian citizens including those who are located outside India.

FORM 49AA: - To be filled by foreign citizens.

2. Application for Duplicate PAN Card or/and Changes or Corrections in PAN Data: - Those who have already obtained the PAN and wish to obtain the new PAN card or want to make some changes / corrections in their PAN data, are required to submit their applications in the following form prescribed by ITD:

REQUEST FOR NEW PAN CARD OR/AND CHANGES OR CORRECTION IN PAN DATA’: - The same form can be used by Indian as well as foreign citizens.

A new PAN card bearing the same PAN but updated information is issued to applicant in such case.
